Den 3:e November kommer Dr. Dean Rickles från Sydney University till Lund och Filosofiska föreningen och ger ett föredrag med titlen ”Leviathan and the Air Pump Redux”.

Rickles forskning är i huvudsak fokuserad kring den moderna fysikens filosofi men till intressena hör bl.a. musikologi, ekonomifilosofi och komplexa system.

Tiden är som vanligt 18:15 och föredraget hålls i sal 203 i Kungshuset. I vanlig ordning serveras mat och dryck på den efterföljande eftersitsen.

Abstract

The dominance of string theory in the research landscape of quantum gravitational physics (despite any direct experimental evidence favouring it) can, I think, be justified in a variety of ways. In this talk I shall focus on an argument from mathematical fertility, broadly similar to Hilary Putnam’s ‘no miracles argument’ that, I argue, many string theorists in fact espouse in some form or other. String theory has generated many surprising, useful, and well-confirmed mathematical ‘predictions’—here I focus on ‘mirror symmetry’ and the ‘mirror theorem’. These predictions were made on the basis of general physical principles entering into string theory. The success of the mathematical predictions are then seen as evidence for the framework that generated them. I shall attempt to describe and defend this argument, but there are nonetheless some serious objections to be faced. These objections can only be evaded at a considerably high (philosophical) price.

Nu är det ny termin och snart dags för Filosofiska föreningens första föredrag. Det är Jennifer Saul som kommer och talar under rubriken ”Unconscious Influences and Women in Philosophy”. Detta äger rum den 16 september kl. 18:15 i sal 203 i Kungshuset och som vanligt följs föredraget av en informell eftersits med mat och vin. Alla intresserade är välkomna!

Nedan följer ett kort abstract.

There is by now a well-established body of research in psychology showing that human beings are strongly influenced by a range of unconscious biases and dispositions related to categories like race, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, etc. So far, there has been little to no empirical work on whether philosophers are influenced by theses biases. But given that philosophers are human beings, it seems very likely that they are. My goal in this paper is to explore the effects these biases may be having in philosophy with respect to women, and to propose and explore some remedies philosophers could implement. In Part One, I review some of the main findings from the empirical literature. In Part Two, I show how these findings may apply to philosophy. In Part Three, I argue that philosophers should want to do something about this situation. And in Part Four, I explore possible remedies.
